Abstract   |   Authors   |   References
An increase in the share of people with disabilities among the population is a global trend. In Russia, just like globally, the process of disablement is gender specific. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) emphasizes that the gender perspective should be taken into account in all efforts to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms among persons with disabilities. However, only a few works of domestic researchers contain analysis of characteristics of male and female disability. The purpose of this article is to analyze gender differences in disability of the adult population in Russia and the reasons for them. The information framework of the research consists of scientific works of domestic and foreign authors, data of European and Russian statistics. The introductory part of the work is devoted to the review of results of studies of disability of the Russian population. The emphasis is put on determining the state of knowledge of the gender aspect of this process, as well as the possibility of its inclusion in the assessment of economic losses from disability. The main part of the research shows how the gender and age composition of the disabled population has changed, and demonstrates the extent of disablement among the male and female population in the country. We estimate the economic losses associated with disability of the female and male population of working age. It is proved that cases of disability among men and women have different effects on individual sectors of economy, and these specific features should be taken into account when assessing the impact of disablement on the society. In view of lack of statistics on the causes of primary disability of the working-age population in the context of gender, the analysis of data on causes of mortality among men and women of working age is presented in the final part. The indicators of quality of medical and social prevention aimed at reducing disability and mortality among these population groups are proposed. The research results may be of interest to healthcare experts, social management, as well as those interested in disability issues
