Nowadays very often people have jobs not related to the specialty they got at educational establishments. According to statistics, half of the graduates have such employment. In this situation, we can talk about a problem of effective implementation of labor potential. Since it is formed in adolescence, it is important to carry out assessment of professional self-determination at school. It is reasonable to assess the extent to which students have formed professional preferences and readiness for labor potential implementation in the future. This work is aimed at presenting results of the method “Readiness of children aged 14–17 to labor potential realization” tested in junior and senior classes of School 13 of the city of Vologda and School 1 of the town Sokol in 2017. The sample consisted of 100 pupils of 9–11 forms, 100 parents and 10 teachers. The information base is presented by publications of domestic scientists, materials of foreign experience, and data of other researches. The following contradictions are identified: although the majority of respondents are ready for employment, at the same time they have no idea of a possible job place. It is the reason for inefficient use of labor potential in regional economy in the future. The gender differences in professional self-determination, which can be taken into account in the formation of educational programs, are revealed. The scientific novelty consists in the development of the method to assess the readiness of children aged 14–17 to effective implementation of labor potential. It includes two parts: the first allows us to assess the formation of professional preferences of children on the basis of self-assessment (Klimov’s method elements); the second consists of the answers of children, teachers and parents according to certain indicators (health, education, communicative competence) and makes it possible to differentiate the readiness of children to realize their labor potential. The data obtained can be used by school administration and the Education Department to assess the effectiveness vocational guidance in educational institutions
