Abstract   |   Authors   |   References
The study of rural-urban migration and migration behavior of the youth in rural areas is a popular topic of scientific research as youth urbanization is intense and leads to quantitative and qualitative changes in the population and the disruption of the demographic balance of territories. The article analyzes the current migration behavior, causes of migration, its scale and regulation opportunities. The analysis is carried out based on statistics on migration flows, results of sociological surveys of young people of all municipal units of the Vologda Oblast aged 14–30 conducted in 2012 and 2017 by the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science “Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences”, and the sociological survey “Human potential of rural areas during the period of socio-economic transformations” among the regions of the Northwestern federal district conducted by the Center in 2017. According to the survey results, young people’s willingness to leave and their meaning of life being migration to the city occurs during life and is not their spontaneous decision. Young people’s desire to leave rural areas appears despite the high share of those with a positive attitude to their place of birth. The main reasons for migration are economic factors: unemployment, difficulties in applying for a job, problems related to receiving education, underdeveloped infrastructure. To reduce youth urbanization, balance population distribution in the region we propose management and economic measures including the socio-cultural aspect. The research results may be of practical interest to researchers in demography, migration, and sociology, as well as the representatives of authorities implementing demographic, migration, and social policy
